What is the
difference between a hub and a switch?
Hubs send all the packets they
receive through all of their ports with no regard for the destination. The use
of hubs adds unnecessary traffic on the network. In contrast, switches use
Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC’s) to make lightening fast
decisions and direct packets to the single port that leads to its destination.
Switches are often referred to as being smart since they learn and remember what
devices are attached to each of their ports. They are ideal for efficiently
connecting the nodes on a LAN.
